SaveDeerLake

Welcome:

This web page is dedicated to all those persons who can see that the east end of Deer Lake, Shelter Bay, Onota Township, Alger County, Upper Peninsula, Michigan, U.S.A. should be preserved and protected.

If you consider yourself a part of this group, then welcome and thank you for your help and support. The purpose of the Citizens to Save Deer Lake Coalition, and the purpose for producing this web page, is to provide a tool for all of you who are in this struggle to stop a proposal by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to construct a boat launch on the east end of Deer Lake. Hopefully, this web page will inspire you to act on behalf of the environmental integrity of this beautiful, little piece of the Earth.

A TERRORIST ACT AGAINST NATURE

As of today, the MDNR has not yet rolled in the bulldozers to commit their act of terrorism on the east end of Deer Lake. So, we wait hoping some miracle will prevent this horrible act from occurring!

PUBLIC HEARING

The Public Hearing at the Deerton School, June 19, went extremely well. There were over 50 persons in attendance and most of them were against the boat launch, as planned by the MDNR. And, most of the persons who made comments support our Alternative Plan (Click here to see a comparison between the MDNR Plan and our Alternative Plan).

A HEARTFELT THANKYOU TO ALL YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE WHO HAVE SENT LETTERS AND/OR ATTENDED THE PUBLIC HEARING!

AND, THE FIGHT CONTINUES

It is imperative that we keep reminding the folks at the MDNR that we do not want the monstrosity they plan to build. We need to remind them that there is a viable alternative that would provide boating access while conserving the environmental integrity of the east end of Deer Lake.

Write to:

Gary Ellenwood

District Supervisor/DNR

Parks & Recreation Division

Route 4, P.O. Box 796

Newberry, MI 49868

Mr. Ellenwood is the MDNR person in charge of the proposed boat launch construction project.

Write to the Marquette Regional office of the MDNR:

Mr. Jim Ekdahl

Deputy U.P. Field Deputy, MDNR

1990 U.S. 41 South, Marquette, MI 49855

Mr. Ekdahl is Mr. Ellenwood's boss, and hence, is also in charge of the project.

"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even tacitly take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machines will be prevented from working at all."
